Do You Need a Rental Car in Olbia? When Yes, When No
Updated October 17, 2026 · 5 min read
The short answer. No, if you stay in Olbia and book boat trips that leave from Olbia, such as the Tavolara and Molara snorkelling trip from Olbia (4 hours, from €70). Yes, if your plan includes Palau and La Maddalena, the Costa Smeralda or beaches away from the bus lines. For a mixed week, rent for the days that need it and not for the whole stay.
What works without a car
Airport guides describe a rental centre about 50 metres from arrivals and an ASPO bus stop just as close. Lines 2 and 10 are reported to run to the centre and the railway station about every 20 minutes for €1.00, valid for 90 minutes. Timetables change by season, so check the current ASPO table before relying on them.
Inside Olbia the centre is a walk, and Pittulongu is reachable by the urban bus network. Regional operators such as ARST run coaches to Palau, Arzachena, Santa Teresa Gallura and Porto Cervo; some of those services run only in summer. That is enough for a traveller whose days are anchored to one departure point.
Where a car starts to earn its keep
Palau is about 42 km from Olbia, roughly 44 minutes by car on the SS125 according to a transfer operator. The coach is possible, but the La Maddalena boats leave at fixed times and you are tied to the return coach after a full day in the sun. With your own car, the 7-hour catamaran tour with lunch from Palau is a simple drive in and out; the route from Olbia to Palau is covered in its own guide.
The same logic applies to small beaches and viewpoints on the Gallura coast. Public transport reaches the resorts, not the quiet coves between them. If those coves are why you came, plan a car.
Three trips, three answers
| Trip | Duration | From | Rating | Car needed? |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Olbia: Dolphin Watching Boat Trip | 2 hours | €39 | 4.7 (1,072 reviews) | No, it starts in Olbia |
| Olbia: Tavolara and Molara Snorkeling Boat Tour | 4 hours | €70 | 4.7 (905 reviews) | No, it starts in Olbia |
| Palau: La Maddalena Archipelago Boat Tour with 4 Stops | 1 day | €55 | 4.5 (2,623 reviews) | Yes, or a coach to Palau |
The dolphin trip is the cheapest and shortest of the three. The Palau tour is the most-reviewed boat trip in this group, but the ticket price hides the cost of getting there.

Who should skip the rental
A cruise-ship day visitor with a few hours should not rent: collecting, parking and returning the car eats the time. Neither should a couple who will spend most days in town and on Olbia boats. A rental also makes little sense for one person who is uneasy with narrow Italian streets and busy summer roads.
Families with a toddler may reach the opposite conclusion. Luggage, a child seat and a hot afternoon make a car calmer than a coach. Ask the rental company about the child seat when you book.

Our recommendation
For most visitors with only boat trips in mind, skip the car and book the Tavolara and Molara trip. For a week that includes Palau, the Costa Smeralda and hidden beaches, rent for those days.
